Nature watch: February

In the garden

goldfinchBirds such as sparrows, blue tits, goldfinches and even our ring-necked parakeets will be happy to use hanging feeders. For ground feeders, such as blackbirds, thrushes and starlings, you could scatter food under the bird table (if cats are not regular visitors to your garden). If the ground is covered in snow, clear a patch to allow them to hunt for insects in the lawn.

Jobs for February:

•Plant trees, shrubs and hedges in milder weather
• Check birdbaths and ponds, and remove ice in cold weather
• Prune winter dogwoods to just above ground level
• Spread compost or bark around shrubs and trees

Top tip:

Out of sight is out of mind. Many thieves are opportunists so keep your valuables locked away. Be discreet with your belongings; displaying expensive jewellery or electronic devices, like mobile phones or cameras, could attract unwanted attention.
